Wooden Cake

How can a woodworker be involved in cake decorating?

My wife is a traditional cake decorator. She does the fancy thing with icing and makes sugary lace and that kind of stuff. An event called for an art deco cake. It could have been made from icing, but in that era much of the furniture was being made from wood. Our conversation meandered around possibilities.

Below is the result of that conversation. We used cheap decorations to light up the construction and even made a double layered board to mount the cake on a razzle dazzle deco pedestal. This collaboration was a happy week with my wife! We had fun talking about it. We had fun making it. The boy who had the birthday loved it!

Beneath the icing were layers of red velvet cake. MMMM YUM.

The act of making is its own end! My friends may comprehend nothing of the object they have created, but are always richer for having been engaged in the act of making it. Spotted Gum Rattler

The clock has been a gentle construction. However, it is about time my friends had some rattle, bang and thump in their work. Using a hammer to thump things together is lots of fun. Work Bench

Enthusiastic, beginning woodworkers look for a place to discover their skills. They read about traditional benches; material costs and required skills are both intimidating. Such great fulfilment can be had when woodworking that I hope the people to whom I talk feel encouraged to go out and experiment with their own creativity. How simply and…

    Serving Tray

Good Ideas Don’t Need to be Complicated Serving Tray For an object to complete the journey from initial musings to touchable reality requires a certain fidelity, on my part, to the original idea. Discouragements take the form of excessively complex prototypes. It is difficult to let simplicity rule. The journey of the serving tray couldn’t be shorter….

Not a Roubo Bench- workbench for a small space

A workbench is a personal statement. In a concrete way it expresses needs, resources and interests of the person who made it. Many boasts are to be found that an author/woodworker has intelligently created superior responses to the needs of a workshop. Here is another entry into that crowded arena. However, what follows makes no…

    The Trolley

The last couple of months have been dominated by the fire engine and clocks, so this blog has been a little quiet. It is good news that we sold thirty clocks with money going to my friends’ care. To keep the blog active, here is an entry about The Trolley. Its creation occupied lots of…
