Toy Aeroplane

Lately, many projects have been created as presents; the latest note pad was a gift to the boss of the house we work in. It is simply time to make something self indulgent.
So, here is our toy aeroplane.
Some of my friends will not be able to make sense of what we are making. Others will slowly realise as the strange shapes come together. But everyone will enjoy the act of banging to make bits of wood stick to each other and the propeller and wheels will be fun to spin around. This type of project is a guarantee for a good time to be had by all.

Batch Production
The fuselage was a nightmare; its complex shape defied efforts at efficient work- oh well! But wings, propeller and tail were band sawn in stacks, five at a time.

This fuselage took lots of time. Cute black rings around the windows were the result of using a blunt deburring tool as a countersink. When you press it hard it overheats. The shed was a little smoky.
All these pieces represent a day’s fun in the shed.

Wheels are enjoyable. The cutter that makes them create a nice shape and, in plywood, tyre treads are simulated.

Here is my little cutter beside the wheels. There is no rule for drill speed here, it needs  vary with timber species as with gentleness from the user. Finding the sweet spot is a rewarding moment.

    Fire Engines

My friends were impressed by the notion that our train’s carriages could be hooked together and towed around. It failed, however, in that each woodworker could only take home a single carriage; they had nothing to tow. At the end of the train project, and experiencing a flush of overconfidence, I asked staff for inspiration. They requested a fire…

    Serving Tray

Good Ideas Don’t Need to be Complicated Serving Tray For an object to complete the journey from initial musings to touchable reality requires a certain fidelity, on my part, to the original idea. Discouragements take the form of excessively complex prototypes. It is difficult to let simplicity rule. The journey of the serving tray couldn’t be shorter….

    Without a Workshop

Work with my disabled friends depends heavily on efficient batch production. For reasons not worth recounting my workshop is out of action for about a year. So, work with my friends has stalled, horribly! To maintain our hands together relationship I need to invent stuff that requires very little wood machining.  Here are two pieces…

    Clocks Finished

Each clock is a joint project. Each clock is a reinforcement of personal skill in dexterity, patience, and communication. We are delighted by ourselves and with ourselves! Our plan is to put these on sale at a local hardware shop. It is fair to say that all of us had fun: clients, carers and volunteers.
