Note Pad- Clip Board

Clip Board

The note pad that went into the Mothers’ Day baskets was a hit. It was both simple to make and functional.

Wooden mechanisms are clumsy. At the proportions of a note pad it is difficult to include complexity. But, enlarged to A4 scale you can fit a nice wooden spring loaded clip at the top- a real clip board!

As with the note pad, the springy nature of plywood is exploited. You can tighten or soften the spring by adjusting the length of cut down the side of the board.

In this case I didn’t have scraps large enough to make the clip from a single piece. Screws increased my confidence in the glue. They also overcame the problem of angled pieces from escaping my clamps.

On its underside the clip gets a more positive hold on the paper if you concentrate its squeeze into a narrow strip rather than spread its force over a wide flat base.

The wide flat clip wants to escape as it wobbles in its wooden job. Holding it in place with little off cuts gets control its meandering ways.

    Fire Engines

My friends were impressed by the notion that our train’s carriages could be hooked together and towed around. It failed, however, in that each woodworker could only take home a single carriage; they had nothing to tow. At the end of the train project, and experiencing a flush of overconfidence, I asked staff for inspiration. They requested a fire…

    Sam’s Basket

Sharing with Good People Sam is a wonderful helper in my disability woodwork lessons. This basket is her idea. She rattled her head until the idea came then generously passed it on to me. Woodwork is fascinating and sharing it is rewarding. BUT the reward is doubled when people in the workshop are enthusiastic.  When the enthusiasm is…

    Serving Tray

Good Ideas Don’t Need to be Complicated Serving Tray For an object to complete the journey from initial musings to touchable reality requires a certain fidelity, on my part, to the original idea. Discouragements take the form of excessively complex prototypes. It is difficult to let simplicity rule. The journey of the serving tray couldn’t be shorter….

    Rubber Band Gun

Naughty Fun Making a rubber band gun is a bit of a dilemma. Is it an encouragement for naughty behaviour? Is it a precursor for violent solutions to problems? As a child, the rubber band guns I made were delicious! Mum didn’t like them; that made them more fun! I didn’t shoot dogs or people;…
