Pallet Wood Barrow

This project began as a means of cleaning out a pile of 60mm x 60mm pallet pine that was getting in the way. …and I had long wanted to try making a wooden wheel.

Each segment was cut to 22.5 degrees and the joints were reinforced with 4mm plywood splines. Slots for the splines were cut with a biscuit jointer. It was the hub that generated some workshop gymnastics. This makeshift mechanism grew on the drill press table and is a lovely example of making it up as you go along. Note the burnt forstner bit. After thirty years’ work it is a tired tool and ready to retire.

The entire construction is engineered around triangles- very simple work. But the wheel was a happy adventure!
